Surface Area of a Sphere: Formula and Why It Works
The surface area of a sphere is 4πr². See the steps, four worked examples, and why Archimedes showed it equals four circles.
By Sheriff Oladimeji
The surface area of a sphere is A = 4πr², where r is the radius. Square the radius, multiply by π, then multiply by 4. For a ball with a radius of 5 inches, that is 4π(25) = 100π, or about 314.16 square inches.
The formula is easy to look up and easy to forget. This guide gives you the steps, four worked examples, and the idea behind the 4 so the formula stops feeling random.

The surface area of a sphere is A = 4πr², measured in square units
It equals exactly four circles with the same radius as the sphere
Doubling the radius quadruples the surface area
If you know the diameter instead, use A = πd²
What Is the Surface Area of a Sphere?
It is the total area of the curved outer surface of a sphere. A sphere has no flat faces, edges or corners, so one formula covers the whole thing. The result is always in square units, such as square inches or square kilometers.
The radius r is the distance from the center to any point on the surface. The diameter d is twice that. Since r = d/2, you can also write the formula as A = π × d², which saves a step when the diameter is what you were given.
How Do You Calculate the Surface Area of a Sphere?
Follow these five steps:
Find the radius. If you have the diameter, divide it by 2.
Square the radius (multiply it by itself).
Multiply by π (about 3.14159).
Multiply by 4.
Write the answer in square units.
Here are four examples, including a shortcut for when you only know the circumference.
What you know | Radius | Working | Surface area |
|---|---|---|---|
Radius of 3 in | 3 | 4π(3²) = 36π | about 113.10 sq in |
Diameter of 10 in | 5 | 4π(5²) = 100π | about 314.16 sq in |
Circumference of 29.5 in (a full-size basketball) | about 4.70 | C² ÷ π = 29.5² ÷ π | about 277.01 sq in |
Earth, radius of 6,371 km | 6,371 | 4π(6,371²) | about 510 million sq km |
The basketball row uses a shortcut. Circumference is C = 2πr, so r = C ÷ 2π. Put that into 4πr² and everything simplifies to A = C² ÷ π. The 29.5 inch circumference is the standard for an NBA ball (Wikipedia, Basketball), and 6,371 km is Earth's volumetric mean radius (NASA Earth Fact Sheet).
Why Is the Formula 4πr²?
Because the surface of a sphere has exactly the same area as four flat circles of the same radius. Archimedes proved this in his work On the Sphere and Cylinder, showing that a sphere's surface area is four times the area of its great circle, the largest circle you can draw around it (MacTutor History of Mathematics, University of St Andrews). A circle has an area of πr², so four of them give 4πr².
He also showed that the surface of a sphere equals the curved side of the cylinder that snugly wraps around it. That cylinder has radius r and height 2r, so its side area is 2πr × 2r = 4πr². Add the two flat ends (2πr²) and the full cylinder is 6πr². The sphere's 4πr² is exactly two-thirds of that. The same 2:3 ratio holds for volume.
Archimedes valued this result so much that he asked for a sphere and cylinder to be shown on his tomb. Cicero later wrote that he found the grave, overgrown with brambles, by spotting a small column topped with a sphere and a cylinder (MacTutor History of Mathematics, University of St Andrews).
Calculus gives a second view. The volume of a sphere is (4/3)πr³, and its derivative with respect to r is 4πr². That is not a coincidence. Stack thin shells of surface area A(r) and thickness dr, and adding them up gives the volume, so the surface area is the rate at which volume grows as the radius grows (Wikipedia, Sphere).
What Happens to the Surface Area When You Double the Radius?
It quadruples. Area depends on the radius squared, so doubling the radius gives 2² = 4 times the area, and tripling it gives 3² = 9 times the area. This is also why the radius is squared in the formula: area measures two dimensions, so lengths get multiplied twice.
What Is the Surface Area of a Hemisphere?
A hemisphere is half a sphere. Its curved surface is half of 4πr², which is 2πr². A solid hemisphere also has a flat circular base of πr², so the total surface area is 2πr² + πr² = 3πr². For a radius of 5, the curved part is about 157.08 and the total is about 235.62.
What Is the Difference Between Surface Area and Volume?
Surface area measures the outside, in square units. Volume measures the space inside, in cubic units. For a sphere:
Surface area: 4πr²
Volume: (4/3)πr³
A quick check is the units. If your answer is in cubic centimeters, you found a volume. If it is in square centimeters, you found an area. Paint for the outside of a ball is a surface area question, while the water that fills it is a volume question.
What Mistakes Do People Make With This Formula?
Four come up again and again:
Forgetting to square the radius. Square r first, then multiply by 4π. Writing 4π × 5 gives 62.8 instead of 314.16.
Using the diameter as the radius. A "10 inch ball" has r = 5, not 10. This one mistake makes your answer four times too big.
Mixing up area and volume. Check the units and the exponent: r² for area, r³ for volume.
Dropping the base on a hemisphere. A solid hemisphere is 3πr², not 2πr², because of the flat base.
How Can You Remember the Formula for Good?
Do not reread it. Test yourself on it. In a classic experiment, students who read a passage once and then took three recall tests remembered about 61% of it a week later, compared with about 40% for students who read it four times (Roediger and Karpicke, 2006). That study used prose passages, not geometry, but the finding is a strong reason to cover the formula and rebuild it from memory.
Try this: write down "four circles" and rebuild 4πr² from it, then solve one problem with a radius and one with a diameter. Come back to it after a day and again after a week. See active recall for the full method, the science of spaced repetition for timing, and the Feynman technique for explaining the idea in your own words.
How Do You Learn Geometry With Morso?
Type a topic such as "surface area and volume of spheres" and Morso builds a course of bite-sized lessons. Every lesson ends with a quiz, and about every three lessons a practice quiz brings back the questions you got wrong. XP and streaks keep the habit going. Try it free on any topic.
The Roediger and Karpicke study did not test geometry or Morso, so treat the quiz as a way to apply a well-supported method, not as proof that a particular course will raise your grades.
The Bottom Line
The surface area of a sphere is 4πr², which is four circles of the same radius wrapped around a ball. Square the radius, watch the units, and remember that doubling the radius quadruples the area. Once you can explain the four circles, you won't need to memorize anything.
